Just in time for Halloween, this post features imagery from the latest installment from our spooky, mysterious and captivating fine art series “Hipsta-keepers.” This and all other volumes from the series can be found on our Behance profile page. Also, our Hipstamatic social media profile page is where Louis and I can most often be found, as the series coincides with our daily doggie walks. See the Artist Statement below.
Hipsta-keepers
What began as playful experimentation with the Hipstamatic Classic Camera app has evolved into an ongoing fine art project exploring urban landscape at night. The app, a digital homage to analog photography, offers a rich palette of interchangeable films, lenses, and flashes—each combination yielding images with distinctive effects that evoke the nostalgia of film. Some setups even add artistic border frames, enhancing the visual allure. The grainy textures, unpredictable color shifts and nighttime compositions in this series evoke a sense of enigma and mystery.
This project naturally aligns with my nightly walks with my dog and best friend, Louis, who often appears as part of the supporting cast. At its core, the work is driven by a fascination with form and composition—but more deeply, it reflects my enduring love for urban landscapes, a passion sparked in my youth while exploring my neighborhood with a Pentax MESuper 35mm SLR, most often loaded with Ektachrome.
The volumes after the first are numbered and titled with the word “New” to mark a deliberate departure from Hipstamatic’s dominant aesthetic. While the Hipstamatic social media camera app enforces a strict 1x1 square format, my work embraces the 2x3 frame. In a sea of square-tagged Hipstamatic imagery, the 2x3 format becomes a rare artifact, a visual signature that sets my work apart. It’s a play on exclusivity, as this project remains a kind of visual outsider—elevated, cinematic, and distinct.
